Soul of a Poet Reading Series

The Soul of a Poet Reading Series is a venue for Missouri State faculty, students, and alumni to share their creative writing with the public in a non-academic setting. The series presents some of the finest writers living in the Springfield area.

The series was co-founded by Missouri State English associate professor Marcus Cafagña and The Library Center branch manager Lorraine Sandstrom in the fall of 2000. Sandstrom named the series.

The Soul of a Poet Reading Series is sponsored by the English Department, the College of Arts and Letters, and The Library Center of Greene County.

The readings are held in The Library Center auditorium on selected Tuesday nights at 7:30. The series is in its fifth year, and each reading has consistently averaged an attendance of 50 to 100 people. It was recently named the most successful and well-attended event at The Library Center. In keeping with the university's public affairs mission, the Soul of a Poet Reading Series presents at least two readings per semester. Each reading typically features two readers—one reads poetry and the other usually reads prose.
