QuestionHow many hours are required to complete an English major?

Every English major must complete 33–36 hours to complete his or her degree program. Students should check with the degree office or an academic advisor regularly throughout their college careers to ensure that all degree program requirements are being met, including all General Education and elective requirements.

QuestionWhat degree programs are offered in the English Department?

What is the difference between a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree?

The main difference is that a B.A. requires two years of a foreign language and a B.S. does not. The Missouri State Undergraduate Catalog states:

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree permits a high degree of specialization in certain fields.
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree denotes a broad background in the liberal arts.

QuestionWhat organizations are open to students in the English Department?

The English Society, the Society for Technical Communication, and the Springfield Literary Society are the organizations open to students in the English Department. Students also have the opportunity to work in the Writing Center. See the Organizations page for more information.
