Springfield Literary Society
The Springfield Literary Society was formed in April 1995 as a project of the Missouri State English Advisory Council. It consists of individuals interested in reading and writing great literature. This organization sponsors several groups that meet with English Department professors monthly to discuss their reading adventures. The professors lead these groups on a voluntary basis.
The following groups meet regularly:
- 19th-Century Literature, Dr. Clark Closser
- Fiction Writing, Dr. W.D. Blackmon
- Shakespeare, Emeritus Professor Dr. Richard Turner
- Children's Literature, Dr. Linda Benson
The groups typically meet at members' homes. The host sends a postcard reminder and usually serves refreshments.
It is possible to form additional groups if there is enough community interest and a community facilitator.
Members of the Springfield Literary Society pay $25 annually for dues. These dues benefit the Missouri State English Department Special Projects. These projects include departmental journals, scholarship funds, and inviting well-known authors to come to Springfield for readings and lectures.
