Society for Technical Communication

The Society for Technical Communication (STC) is a professional organization. Its purpose is to advance the arts and sciences of technical communication. With 22,000 members worldwide whose job titles include technical writers, editors, web designers, and more, STC serves a wide range of individuals whose work involves taking technical information from experts and making it available and accessible to those who need that information.

STC members enjoy many benefits. They have access to special members-only sections of the STC Web site. After attaining membership status, members regularly receive STC's two award-winning publications: Intercom and Technical Communication. Intercom is a monthly magazine that provides practical examples and applications of technical communication. Technical Communication is a quarterly journal that includes articles about applying technical communication theory.

Missouri State has a very active STC student chapter. Since its first meeting in March 1993, the chapter has grown to have an equal membership of students and professionals.

In 2000, the Missouri State student chapter of STC won the Chapter Achievement Award, which is the highest award a chapter can win. The Missouri State student chapter was the only student chapter in the world to win the award that year.

Dr. Kris Sutliff, assistant English Department head and coordinator of the technical writing program, is the faculty advisor for the Missouri State student chapter of STC. In 2000, Dr. Sutliff was named an STC fellow, which is the highest rank one can achieve in the society as well as in the field of technical communication.

STC meetings are held once a month and regularly include presentations by accomplished technical communicators. One does not have to be a member of STC to attend meetings.
