Mission

Students in the creative writing program at Missouri State are prepared for careers in writing all types of creative works, including poetry, screen plays, short stories, and personal essays. Courses in this program allow students to gain experience in writing both fiction and nonfiction pieces. Students also have the opportunity to become involved in extracurricular activities in the creative writing field.

Program Description

All students in the creative writing program must complete all General Education requirements. (See the General Education section of the catalog.)

Major Requirements (33 hours)

All students in the B.A. in English/Creative Writing program must complete the following required courses:

ENG 235: Critical Approaches to Literature 3 hrs.
ENG 351: Survey of American Literature II 3 hrs.
ENG 508: Creative Writing Project 3 hrs.
Two courses from:
ENG 340: Survey of English Literature I
ENG 341: Survey of English Literature II
ENG 350: Survey of American Literature I
6 hrs.
One course from:
ENG 354: Ethnic American Literature
ENG 355: African-American Literature
ENG 360: Survey of European Literature I
ENG 361: Survey of European Literature II
ENG 362: Non-European World Literature
ENG 363: Introduction to African Literature
ENG 380: Introduction to Women's Literature
3 hrs.
One 500-level literature course 3 hrs.
Two courses from:
ENG 203: Creative Writing: Poetry
ENG 215: Creative Writing: Short Story
ENG 225: Creative Writing: Playwriting
