Technical/Professional Writing Track
Core and Degree Requirements
All students seeking a Master of Arts in Writing degree complete the same core and degree requirements. In addition, students specialize in their particular area of study by completing requirements in their track. Track Requirements
Students who choose the graduate track in technical/professional writing have the following two options:
- Academic Option: This option is designed for students who plan to teach and/or pursue a Ph.D.
- Professional Option: This option is designed for students who plan a career in writing.
Academic Option
In addition to the core and degree requirements, students who choose the academic option must complete the following courses:
| ENG 671: Professional Writing or ENG 675: Designing Technical Documents |
3 hrs. |
| ENG 670: Teaching Technical/Professional Writing | 3 hrs. |
| ENG 699: Thesis | 6 hrs. |
| Elective in English or an approved cognate area | 2–3 hrs. |
| Total | 14–15 hrs. |

Professional Option
In addition to the core and degree requirements, students who choose the professional option must complete the following courses:
| ENG 671: Professional Writing | 3 hrs. |
| ENG 675: Designing Technical Documents | 3 hrs. |
| ENG 574: Technical Writing Internship | 3 hrs. |
| ENG 699: Thesis or Electives in English or an approved cognate area |
5–6 hrs. |
