English as a Second Language
The following Web sites provide helpful information for students studying ESL and for faculty teaching it.
CNN Newsroom and World View for ESL
This site provides a variety of activies for ESL learners including a weekly vocabualry quiz taken from the content of World View programs, and grammar and discussion questions as well. Vocabulary quizzes provide drop-down menus which allow students to choose from a number of words to fill in the blanks. The quizzes may then be submitted for "grading." The quizzes are based upon a weekly Newsroom or WorldView Broadcast by Turner Educational Services Inc.
Dave's site provides various links for teachers and students alike. Topics include Links for Teachers, Mailing List, Job Center, Bookstore, Links for Students, Quiz Center, Quote Page, Idiom Page, Question Page, Slang, Email connections, etc. Recommended as a primo site by our own Jennifer Morrison.
This is a collection of sites relevant to English Language Teaching and Learning on the World-Wide Web. Each site is linked to the next, so that no matter where you start, you will eventually make your way around all the sites and end up back at the beginning.
Includes games like "Hexagons" and "Battle Spaceships" for use with vocabulary work (or with grammar), which might be most suitable for younger learners, but might also be adapted to use with adults. It also has a phonetic chart, trivia questions, and an idea sheet to simulate speaking/conversation. In addition, this page provides links to other pages which include pen pals, ESLoop sites, and online courses. A very good site.
The Online Writing Lab at Purdue University
This site provides a set of resources for ESL teachers and students. It includes handouts and links to related internet sites. This resource should be especially useful for educators new to ESL settings. The OWL (Online Writing Lab) is part of a collection of instructional materials used in the Purdue University Writing Lab.
Pizzaz!, a site created by Leslie Opp-Beckman, provides creative writing activities and copyable handouts for use with ESL students of all ages.
