Major requirements (36 hours):

Major core (21 hours):
  1. Introductory Experience (9 hours): ENG 235(3); and one course from ENG 203(3), 205(3), 215(3), 216(3), 225(3), 339(3); and one course from ENG 200(3), 282(3), 283(3), 289(3).
  2. American Literature (3 hours): one course from ENG 350(3), 351(3), 517(3), 519(3), 553(3), 557(3), 558(3), 559(3), 562(3).
  3. British Literature (3 hours): one course from ENG 312(3), 340(3), 341(3), 510(3), 512(3), 513(3), 514(3), 541(3), 543(3), 544(3), 546(3), 547(3), 548(3), 598(3).
  4. Diversity (3 hours): one course from ENG 354(3), 355(3), 362(3), 363(3), 554(3).
  5. Public Affairs Capstone Experience: ENG 301(3) or 599(3).
  6. Pre-1800 requirement: at least three of the 36 hours taken in the English major must be a pre-1800 literature course: ENG 312(3), 340(3), 510(3), 513(3), 541(3), 553(3), 598(3).
  7. Minor required (or second major).

Complete one of the following options:
Creative Writing option (15 hours):
  1. Introductory Creative Writing: one course from ENG 203(3), 205(3), 215(3), 216(3), 225(3).
  2. Intermediate Creative Writing: one course from ENG 303(3), 305(3), 315(3), 316(3), 325(3).
  3. Advanced Creative Writing: one course from ENG 500(3), 501(3), 503(3), 506(3).
  4. Upper-division Creative Writing elective: one additional course from ENG 303(3), 305(3), 315(3), 316(3), 325(3), 500(3), 501(3), 503(3), 506(3), 540(3). Course selected may be the same of the Advanced Creative Writing requirement selection if the student is repeating the course for additional credit.
  5. ENG 551(3).
Literature option (15 hours):
  1. Additional American Literature (3 hours): one course from ENG 350(3) or 351(3). May not be double-counted from the American Literature core requirement.
  2. Additional British Literature (3 hours): one course from ENG 340(3) or 341(3). May not be double-counted from the British Literature major core requirement.
  3. Specialized Approaches (3 hours): one course from ENG 435(3), 483(3), 491(3), 533(3), 534(3), 563(3), 580(3), 583(3).
  4. Electives (6 hours): choose two ENG electives, at least one of which must be a 400 or 500 level literature course.
