This certificate is jointly offered by the Department of English and the Department
of World Languages and Cultures. This certificate provides a strong foundation for
students in linguistics. It additionally qualifies students for advanced professional
and/or postgraduate training in various areas, including but not limited to programs
in sociolinguistics, anthropology, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics,
forensic linguistics, artificial intelligence, and/or machine-learning. The certificate
also provides scope for engaging in services in language consultancy, translation
and editing, preservation programs for endangered languages, and/or teaching.
This certificate is administered by the Department of English.
Admission requirement
Six hours in a second or foreign language.
Program requirements (12 hours)
- One course from: ANT 306(3), ANT 380(3)*, CSD 209(3), ENG 296(3), FRN 324(3), SPN 324(3).
- Two courses in linguistics and/or language acquisition: CSD 312(3), ENG 390(3), ENG 491(3)*, ENG 590(3), ENG 593(3), ENG 595(3), FRN 524(3), FRN 590(3), SPN 524(3), SPN 590(3), PSY 523(3).
- One course from: ANT 380(3)*, ENG 491(3)*, ENG 494(3), ENG 592(3).
*ANT 380 and ENG 491 cannot double-count in number 1 and/or 2 and also in number 3.
- All candidates must satisfy the General University Certificate Requirements.
